What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is the process of repairing the damaged part of the tooth. In the root canal treatment procedure, also called endodontic treatment, the soft centre known as the dental pulp is removed through the cavity opened into the tooth. The pulp consists of connective tissue, nerves and blood supply and extends to the roots of the tooth. After the pulp is removed, the cavity is filled and sealed. What are the Types of Root Canal Treatment?

They can offer you the best root canal treatment based on patients’ personal dental conditions. Different types of root canal treatment are available to heal patients.

Primary Root Canal Treatment: It is performed to manage infection or inflammation in the tooth.

Secondary Root Canal Treatment: It is the second step to be done when the problem is not resolved with the first root canal treatment.

Apicoectomy: Apico” means apex and “ectomy” means removal. Apicoectomy is a microsurgical procedure in which infected tissue and the tip of the root of the tooth are removed. This is necessary if regular root canal treatments have failed.

Pulpotomy: It is a procedure usually performed in a child to remove the nerve and diseased pulp from the crown of the tooth. It is done by means of therapeutic dressing and the root nerve is left intact.

Pulpectomy: It is also a pediatric endodontic procedure. It is done when all of the pulp needs to be eliminated. In this treatment, diseased pulp tissues are eliminated from both the root and the crown. The canals for milk teeth are cleaned and sprayed.

How is Root Canal Treatment Procedure Applied?

Root canal treatment is done in three steps and is completed between 1 and 3 sessions.

  1. Cleaning the Root Canal

First, all tissue inside the root canal is removed. The patient is not touched by local anaesthesia and a small entrance hole is opened on the tooth surface. In this way, diseased and dead pulp tissue is removed.

  1. Filling the Root Canal

The hollow area is then cleaned, shaped and decontaminated using small files and irrigation solutions. The tooth is then filled with a rubber-like material using an adhesive cement to completely seal the canals. After root canal treatment, the tooth is now dead. Since the nerve tissue is removed and the infection is eliminated, the patient will no longer feel any pain in that tooth.

  1. Crown Adding or Filling

A tooth without pulp must get its nourishment from the ligament that connects the tooth to the bone. This is enough to make the tooth strong, but over time the tooth becomes more fragile, so a crown or filling provides protection.

The patient should not use chewing or biting procedures until the crown or filling is complete. After the crown tooth or filling is completed, the person can use the tooth as before.
