Sinus Lifting (Sinus Augmentation) in Turkey

They are air spaces that exist to make sinus sounds properly and reduce our headache. From the sinuses, the maxillary sinus is located in the neighbouring areas of our molars. Sinus lifting treatment is needed if the maxillary sinuses are too low or too close to the maxilla.

What is a Sinus Lifting? In Which Situations Should Sinus Lifting Application Be Applied?

Sinus lifting treatment, which develops due to factors such as anatomical factors and edentulous, is a bone grafting procedure that prepares the upper jaw for dental implants.

Sinus lifting occurs as a result of the loss of bone volume as a result of the downward sagging of the sinus cavities. In patients who need implant treatment, if the vertical distance required for the implant in the area of the molar and premolar teeth in the upper jaw is not sufficient, sinus lifting (sinus lifting) should be applied in order to increase the bone height.

In Which Situations Should Sinus Augmentation Treatment Be Applied?

  • With the loss of maxillary molars, the bone that is not exposed to chewing force begins to decrease over time. Within 3-4 years following tooth extraction, the height of the bone surrounding the tooth decreases by 60%.
  • Gum diseases can cause the bones surrounding the teeth to melt. For this reason, sagging of the sinuses may occur.
  • Congenital maxillary sinuses may be close with the molars underneath. Sinus depression may occur due to tooth loss.

Who Can Have Sinus Lifting?

There are several reasons why this treatment is necessary before implant treatment for our patients with missing teeth in the upper jaw. This reasons;

  • If the bone height in the upper jaw is not sufficient for the implant
  • If the sinus floor is closer to the upper jaw than necessary,
  • If you have sinus sagging symptoms, sinus lifting

How is Sinus Lifting Surgery Performed? What are the Types of Sinus Lift Surgery?

Sinus lifting is a procedure performed in the dentist’s chair under local anaesthesia. The sinus area to be removed is reached by means of a small window opened through the gingiva in that area. After the sinus membrane covering the inside of the sinus is raised to the desired level, bone powder and grafting are applied to the created space and the area is closed with sutures. Depending on the jaw structure, the stages may progress slower or faster. This situation varies from person to person.

There are 2 types of sinus lifting methods, closed and open sinus lifting.

Open (Lateral) sinus lifting: In open sinus lifting surgery, local anaesthesia is performed first. In the open sinus lifting technique, an incision is made on the gum line. While removing the sinus area, bone powder is placed in the opened space. Then the incision is closed with sutures.

Closed (Internal) sinus lifting: In the closed sinus lifting technique, if the bone height in the jawbone is 4 mm or less, sinus lifting is performed. Under local anaesthesia, the floor of the sinus is broken with a special instrument called an osteotomy and the sinus is elevated. Afterwards, bone powder is placed in this cavity. Sinus opening in the tooth results in closed and open sinus lift techniques. Closed sinus elevation is a technique that is applied in cases where there is a bone height of 5 mm and more and also allows the placement of the implant.

Sinus lifting is a painless procedure that takes about 45 minutes with local anaesthesia. In cases with sufficient bone volume, it can be applied to the implant in the same session and this procedure extends the time by 10-15 minutes.

What Should I Pay Attention to After Sinus Lift?

  • In order to protect the treated area, food should not be eaten for the first 24 hours. Soft foods should be preferred for 2 hours in these 24 hours.
  • After the sinus lift, nose cleaning should be avoided and care should be taken not to sneeze with the mouth open.
  • Smoking should be avoided for at least 12-24 hours.
  • Any anticoagulant drug, including aspirin, should not be used.
  • Consult your doctor in case of unexpected bleeding, swelling and pain after sinus lift procedure.

How long after sinus lifting (sinus lifting) can implants be made?

While the implants can be placed during the sinus lifting operation, the implant placement can also be performed with a separate operation 3-6 months after the sinus lifting operation. This selection is determined by the amount of bone lost as a result of detailed examination, the amount of bone placed, the technique of sinus lifting surgery, the length of the area to be loaded, the number of implants, its length and diameter.

Is Sinus Lifting a Harmful Procedure?

Sinus lifting is not a harmful procedure, but if it is not done well, a tear may occur in the sinus mucosa with the bone graft placed during the operation. In this case, either the existing bone becomes infected, melts or an infection occurs. In these complications, the sinus is reopened and infected bone grafts must be removed from there. As a result, the operation fails. At this point, criteria such as the experience, meticulousness and quality of sterilization materials in the treatment process of the clinic and dentist you will apply in the treatment of sinus lifting are extremely important.

How long does sinus lift surgery take?

It is aimed to obtain bone again by lifting the sagging sinus membrane up and filling the existing space with bone grafts. The duration of the operation often varies between half an hour and 1 hour.
